I’M THINKING OF A PLACE WHERE WE COULD MEET

‘I’m Thinking Of A Place Where We Could Meet,’ celebrates the art of self-mediated documentation by delving into my experiences with my body, sexuality, erotica, relationships, and religion through archival material and video installations to invite viewers into an intimate exploration of the human experience. Through this installation piece, Hamza hopes to offer a sanctuary where shared vulnerabilities and courageous self-expression intertwine, allowing you to foster connection and empathy with the person in front of you.

This installation piece was in partnership with Leeds-based collective, ‘AZUCAR Creative Space’ for their curatorial exhibition titled, ‘Erotic Love’ in April, 2023.

DNI COLLECTIVE: IN OUR DEFENCE: RE_FRAMING POST COLONIAL GROUNDS & DILETTANTES

This poster artwork was created for DNI Collective’s curitorial programme titled “In Our Defence: Reframing Post Colonial Grounds & Dilettantes”, which was intended to offer their artists the platform to question social standards, political viewpoints and the challenges/injustices they’ve faced as individuals in the world in regard to their individual backgrounds.

The poster was a mix of illustrative and mixed-media depicting a mass protest with political statements as banners that fit into all the themes that were being explored by the artwork commissioned by their artists. It was a way to make a stance of the themes they were touching on as a collective while teasing the artworks soon to come.

THEY LOVE TO HATE ME,
YET THEY LOVE MY LABOUR

A mixed-media poster intended to serve as a crtique on migrant labour exploitation and laws that occur in Qatar and specifically to comment on the FIFA World Cup 2023 games that took place in the country. The piece is a combination of the migrant rights issue and my own experiences from being born and raised as a Pakistani immigrant in Qatar.

This piece was in display under the alias ‘EMAN’ for DNI Collective’s exhibition in 2023 titled, ‘In Our Defence: Re-Framing Post Colonial Grounds & Dilettantes’.

I THINK I MIGHT HAVE BEEN GOING ABOUT THINGS THE WRONG WAY THIS WHOLE TIME

The printed media here was for my graduate body of work titled, ‘I’m Thinking Of A Place Where We Could Meet’. The installation itself traced back 10 months of footage through seven video diaries that I filmed unconciously as a way to cope with navigating out of co-dependency from a formative relationship through my teen years till my early 20s.

The installation served as a time capsule in my life where I turned the camera back on myself and gave myself grace for navigating shame over how I was grieving. This was an accompany to the visuals where the printed media and artefacts that were designed and displayed across the room. From journals, letters, audio cassettes, postcards, zines - all packaged in parcels for audiences to engage with and trace back a year of memories on their own accord.

A mediated approach to transporting back to memories from a removed lens to reach a better understanding of ourselves as humans.
